You are playing with your new puppy and you are both having a great time, and then all of a sudden she sinks her needle sharp teeth into your skin. Ouch! Although this is very common and perfectly normal behavior for a puppy it is none the less quite painful and it has to stop.
First of all, you have to understand that puppies explore their world in part with their mouths. They love to play fight and they have been doing this with their litter mates since they learned to walk. Scuffling with each other and biting each other is their favorite game with their brothers and sisters. In a puppy play fight, when it gets too rough and one bites the other too hard, the one who was bitten yaps and runs away and the game is over. Aww.
When your puppy bites you and it hurts, you will be tempted to bite the puppy back, or hit it with the newspaper, but this will do little or nothing to curb the bad behavior. You must recreate the end of the puppy play fight game to fix this problem.
When you are playing with your puppy and it bites, you need to yell at the top of your lungs. Let out a scream like the puppy just bit your finger clean off. Really ham it up on the yell. Then turn away from your puppy and remove yourself from the game. Count slowly to 10 then resume play with the puppy. When she does it again, same thing, yell in pain and stop play and count to 15. This is the worst punishment you can administer to your puppy. They hate to be ignored and will do anything to play with you again. The bites will get more and more gentle over time. This is not a quick fix because the puppies instinct to bite during play is very strong. You can take this as far as if you even feel teeth on your skin you yell and ignore.
You want to curb this bad behavior early so that your puppy learns bite strength control before she grows into a powerful animal with big teeth and a lot of bite strength.
Everyone in the house needs to be onboard with the training plan so the puppy sees consistency and she will soon believe that human skin must be so sensitive and she must be gentle to get her favorite reward... to play with you.
